When is Hogwarts Legacy set? Harry Potter timeline explained

Hogwarts Legacy is already one of the most talked-about games of the year, but fans of the books and movies may be wondering when the game will be out. Here’s everything there is to know about Hogwarts Legacy being set within the Harry Potter timeline.

Harry Potter fans will be able to live out their ultimate fantasy when Hogwarts Legacy arrives in February to attend the prestigious school of witchcraft and wizardry, choose their own house and attend magical classes.

Despite the controversy surrounding the authorship of the books, Hogwarts Legacy is already being touted as one of the biggest games of 2023. But those looking to enter the Wizarding World may wonder when the game’s story takes place in comparison to the existing movies and books.

Here’s a breakdown of when Hogwarts Legacy is set in relation to Harry Potter and other works in the same universe.

When does Hogwarts Legacy take place?

The Story of Hogwarts Legacy begins in 1890, A full 100 years before the events of JK Rowling’s original book, It’s not yet clear how many years Hogwart’s Legacy plot will take place, but we do know it takes place after a student’s first year at the school.

That means players won’t be bumping into the likes of Harry and Hermoine around the school grounds, as the Hogwarts legacy takes a full century before entering the Great Hall. But there will also be other classic characters to meet during the game.

So far, the farthest the movies have taken us in time is the early 1920s in the Fantastic Beasts series, but portkey gameThe story takes place three decades before the emergence of Newt Scamander as a hero.

However, that doesn’t mean that characters from those films won’t appear in Hogwarts Legacy. Most notably, although his rise to power is still years away, a young Gellert Grindelwald is alive during this time period and may even have been a fellow student.

Likewise, great wizard and future headmaster Albus Dumbledore arrived at Hogwarts in 1892, so don’t rule out a reference or cameo from a fresh-faced version of Harry’s mentor depending on how much time has passed.
