An Overwatch 2 developer has indicated that Season 3 will introduce changes to the rewards system, giving players more control over what they unlock.
One of the major ways Overwatch 2 differentiated itself from the original game was its switch to a new free-to-play model, complete with a Seasonal Battle Pass filled with cosmetics to unlock.
Despite the decision to attract millions of players to the game at launch, the community has criticized how difficult it is to earn rewards in Overwatch 2. Outside of the Battle Pass, new skins can only be unlocked by purchasing them in-game. Stores are earned using premium currency purchased with real money, or by grinding weekly objectives.
Fortunately, Overwatch 2’s executive producer, Jared Neuss, has indicated that changes to the rewards system will be coming in Season 3.
Neuss has been openly answering questions surrounding OW2 on Twitter, and was asked on January 13 if there were any intentions to start handing over premium currency regularly.
“Are there any plans to reward players with free coins by increasing the amount they earn from playing games or weekly challenges?” asked Gideon Williams.
God It responded by revealing that the rewards will be tweaked when the next major update arrives to give players more control over what they unlock.
Neus replied, “We have some updates coming to S3 that we’ll talk about soon to address the lack of choice in the prize.” “I’ll keep it vague for now.”
Sadly, Overwatch 2’s executive producer didn’t reveal more details about what the new-look rewards will be. It has been speculated that Season 3 may overhaul the Battle Pass to allow players to choose their own path through it, much like Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2.
The current Battle Pass keeps fans on a fixed path, forcing them to grind through multiple levels that may include cosmetics for heroes they rarely use.
Switching to this format won’t just solve the Overwatch 2 coins shortage, it will allow players to focus on the Battle Pass rewards they want right away.
We’ll have to wait and see what the devs have planned when Overwatch 2 Season 3 arrives in early February.
